Project Description

To Design an external escape stairs starting on floor 7 and ending on floor 10. Required landings and access areas at each level

Issues Faced

  1. No As-built Drawings of the existing building were available.
  2. All columns and beams were hidden behind fascia of plasterboard.
  3. All existing beams had a 50mm layer if intumescent foam
  4. The only access for lifting was over a canal, from a carpark.

Solutions Provided

Our survey team spent 3 days on-site, uncovering the columns/beams and taking detailed measurements of the area, this included all levels and existing parapets. Once surveyed, the information was passed over to the CAD department who created a 1:1 exact model in Advance Steel.

With the model, our Structural engineer began to work on the loadings and connections required. We liaised with the clients SE over leg positions and interfaces as the roof on level 8 was very weak. Once all positions were confirmed, our survey team re-visited site to mark out all interface areas and look interrogate these for potential clashes/issues. The final survey along with the SE report was passed to the CAD department who finalised the preliminary model and created all GA’s. Our management team co-ordinated the design sign off process, working very closely with our clients client’s and Manchester’s BC. All drawings, fabrication details, BOMs and reports were issued to our client for manufacture. Our site team spent 3 days with the install team, starting with marking all levels from the total stations and then identifying all columns/beams in the lifting sequence provided.
